In today’s Basketball Tutorial video presented by Shot Science Basketball, Coach Tom Curtiss explains how to have SMOTHERING DEFENSE by using the “Belly Up & Mirror” concept. Once the offensive player picks up the dribble, they only have two real options; shoot or pass. It’s your job to make both of those options as difficult as possible by closing out and pressuring them. Once you’re in their face, you want to “Belly Up” to them and then “Mirror” the ball with both of your hands. With the added heat, they will not be able to get off a shot and making a pass is made extremely difficult because your tracing the ball and obscuring open passing lanes. Also, the added pressure will make them more frantic to get rid of the ball because of the imminent 5 second call, so they are prone to making mistakes and turning the ball over.
By “Mirroring the Ball,” you will save yourself from fouling the offensive player and bailing them out of their tight spot. So pretend like there is a pane of glass between you and your man and never break the plane of the glass. Make them make the mistake and turn the ball over to you!
Make sure you’ve watched our introduction to Defense called “Defense 101,” which will give you the foundation for tough man-to-man defense:
