His parents eventually found out about us and invited me over. They had known me from before when we were just friends. However this time, the polite socialness was gone. His mother folded her arms and leaned across the table and began interregating me. I was in absloute shock. I have never been very good with words and began stumbling and stuttering. When they changed the topic to my family, I lost it. My dad had spent several months in jail for spousal and child abuse. My mother is a drug addict, and my twin brother had already been arrested three times. I avoided the subject as much as possible.

five months later, Chris began staying the night at my house almost every night. He was in college about an hour drive away, and began to save gas money just by staying. He would sleep on the couch in the livingroom. One morning he left at about seven AM for class. I had stayed home from school with a headache. Apparently while he was driving home, he had passed his mother on a road close to my house. She signaled him to pull over and asked why he was not at school so early. He told her the truth and she flipped. She immediatly drove to my house and yelled at my mom for allowing her nineteen year old son to stay the night. My mom laughed in her face.

Months later, in the summer time, Chris and I wanted to go to his family’s lake house to go fishing. We were banned because that would mean we would be alone without adult supervision.

December came for our one year anniversary. There was a party at Chris’s house. To which I was not invited. One of his younger cousins spilled a drink and he figured he’d buy some carpet cleaner after he saw me that evening. We had just arrived at the mall to do Chrismas shopping when he got a phone call from his mother screaming that he was to take me home and drive the hour back to his house to clean the carpet. Chris said he’d do it when he got home because the stain would not set. His mom called him rude and an embarrasment. He began crying. I got on the phone and very calmly said "Hi Mrs. K**** what seems to be the problem?" She hollered. "Stay out of my families business Jenna! You will never be a part of this family." I retorted and said "I’m just trying to help. I’m sorry." She hung up. Her husband called back and said I was harrassing the family. I began crying and Chris did not defend me. He did however refuse to drive the hour to clean up the stain which he could do anytime, because like I said, it would NOT set.

His parents did however take away his truck, his licence, his bank cards, his laptop and his money. By which of course, are all his property, being that he was now twenty. When I found this out, I drove to his house and picked him up. He stayed at my house (under my grandma’s request) for a month. He eventually worked things out with his parents under the threat they would take away his college tuition.

We got engaged that month. My family was ecstatic. We spent every moment together and they said although we are young, they knew we were ready. No one seemed upset. His parents found out and didn’t seem to have much of a problem. We were wrong. His uncle emailed him calling me nothing but a piece of ass (mind you, I have NEVER met this uncle) he told Chris I was ruining his family.

Spring time came and although we had already told his parents, his father found out again from someone at Church we were still intending to get married…in five years. He lost it and they told chris they disaprove of me because they hate to see what I’d do to their grandkids. They said I would tear their family apart.

I heard this news, and went to his parents to formally apologize for everything that had upset his parents. We spent the day laughing and having a very good time together. Everything between us was finally fixed.

Then, after my graduation date, Chris got a promotion in his work, he was now management and making enough money for us to get an apartment. He only had three months left of college and was making straight A’s (Oh the hours I spent tutoring!!!) We decided it was best for us to get an apartment because my dad was back in jail, and my brother had joined him.

We were losing another house (second one in two years) and I knew I would have no where to live because we were intending to check my mother into a hospital.

Chris went fishing with his dad and asked how he would feel if we got an apartment together during the summer. His dad agreed saying it would be best if we would live together before marriage, just in case it didn’t work out. Chris explained to his dad that I HAD to get out of my house because things were really bad. They okayed us living together. That night we signed our lease to an apartment and they flipped and are having ppl harrass us
they even flipped on my parents who had nothing to do with us moving in together. His whole family is harrassing chris at work and having other people come in and tell him how much of a horrible person I am. So my question is, how do I keep the drama down to a minimum. Chris is going to lose his job over this and I’m going to be on the streets. they are ruining so much more than just our relationship….

TLDR – But I will say this, it doesn’t matter what ANYONE thinks, it only matters what you two think. For any relationship to work your partner should come first before ANYONE. So even though it would be nice for his family to like you, don’t sweat it.

There was a hitch, of course. Chang-Diaz wasn’t American. He lived outside the United States. And the Costa Rican didn’t even speak English.

No matter. Chang-Diaz would overcome these obstacles and more to fly a record-tying seven missions aboard the space shuttle. Along the way the physicist would also develop a plasma rocket that promises a revolutionary approach to spaceflight.

The rocket, potentially, could blast the next generation of astronauts to Mars in just 39 days, about one fifth of the time required by existing rocketry.

At a time when much of Houston’s space community is openly hostile to President Barack Obama’s desire to remake NASA’s human spaceflight program, Chang-Diaz, 60, is among those welcoming it.

“Even though this transition is very strong medicine, and it is being applied at a very awkward moment, it is the right thing to do,” he said.

From his perspective, if humans are ever to venture substantially beyond Earth’s moon, they’ll need advanced propulsion systems to do so.

And the sooner NASA begins reinvesting in them — funding for advanced propulsion dried up in 2005 when money was diverted into the Constellation program to build conventional rockets to send astronauts back to the moon

— the better, says Chang-Diaz, whose Clear Lake rocket company, Ad Astra, could profit from such a change.

On Thursday, in a speech to promote his space policy plans, Obama confirmed that it will take new technologies for NASA to explore deeper into the solar system.

“We’ve got to do it in a smart way,” he said at Kennedy Space Center in Florida. “We can’t keep doing the same old things as before.”

One-way ticket to U.S.
Chang-Diaz’s story begins in a San José bank, where he worked as a teller after graduating from high school to scrabble together enough money to come to the United States. After nine months Chang-Diaz had saved $50 and convinced his dad, a construction foreman, to buy him a one-way ticket to America.

In 1968 he arrived in Hartford, Conn., to stay with distant relatives. Not speaking English, he enrolled in a local high school to learn the language and, in time, apply to college.

“Of course it was a disaster,” Chang-Diaz recalled. “The first marking period I failed everything. But from being at the bottom I began to improve, and towards the end of the year I was near the top of the class.”

So promising a student was he that Chang-Diaz earned a partial scholarship to the University of Connecticut. He sailed through college and, later, graduate school at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, studying mechanical engineering and physics, with an interest in plasma, an electrically charged gas that responds to electromagnetic fields.

By 1979, Chang-Diaz was a citizen, and NASA was seeking scientists for its new space shuttle program. In 1980, he became NASA’s first Hispanic astronaut, moved to Houston, and six years later launched aboard Columbia.

“I flew on all of the space shuttles,” he said. “I flew on Mir. I flew on the International Space Station. I just got to experience everything. Having come from a little country in Central America, sometimes it’s amazing for me to even believe.”
