http://vault.ncaa.com/ In one of the most memorable games in NCAA history, Lorenzo Charles converts Derreck Whittenburg’s desperation shot, to win the championship. Coach Jim Valvano and the “Cardiac Kids” celebrate one of the largest upsets in tournament history. Houston’s “Phi Slamma Jamma” was led by Akeem Olajuwon, who won the Most Outstanding Player in spite of the loss.

I remember sitting …
I remember sitting in my living room as a freshman in high school in complete shock. I grew up in a small down 50 miles SW of Houston. My stomach was churning sick after Charles slam. The only other time that has happened in my life was when Texas fumbled a punt with 1 minute left leading 9-3 in the in the 2004 Cotton Bowl against Georgia. Georgia recovered, scored, beat Texas 10-9 and cost Texas the National Champtionship for 1983. Now, that made me sick!

I still remember …
I still remember rolling on the floor after that dunk. The euphoria was better than any drug could possibly be. Most people don’t realize they had to win the ACC Tournament just to get invited to the dance. Every game was a nail biter.
Truly a team of destiny if ever there was one.

I’m a UNC fan, but I miss the days when state was like this. It was more fun if you live in NC. I enjoy it more than the duke rivalry. Jimmy V is inspirational no matter who you pull for.
